Cap Rouge Pharmacy Project

Brother Arie has been reassigned from Palmiste Au Vin Monastery to a small community called Cap Rouge. We visited this community the last time we were in Haiti and let me tell you, it is quite the bumpy car ride through the mountains! Due to the remote location, there are limited supplies and clean water in this location. Brother Arie has proposed a project to start a small pharmacy in the area with on call doctors since there is currently no medical care in Cap Rouge. Additionally, he is assisting with the installation of a water purification center.

In Cap Rouge there are no doctors or medical facilities. Transportation is difficult and you must travel to the nearest large city of Jacmel even to buy medications. Brother Arie had a personal experience with this lack of medical treatment when a lady in the community became sick and they didn’t even have a blood pressure monitor to check her vitals. He had to call someone from Leogane to quickly come to bring medication and a blood pressure monitor to stabilize her.

In addition to having medication in life threatening situations, the pharmacy clinic will also allow members of the community to receive fundamental care to all types of ailments and sicknesses. Nurses will be hired to administer the medication and run the pharmacy clinic. Doctors will be available via an on call telehealth setup.

This project will be implemented in various stages. The first stage involves preparing the pharmacy clinic location and purchasing the necessary supplies and medications. The second stage involves hiring nurses and doctors as well as identifying the pricing of medications and pharmacy clinic visits. Lastly, the pharmacy clinic will open and the operation will be monitored to ensure it is meeting its objectives and for any areas of improvement.

The Haiti Mission has sent funding to begin the first stage of implementation. We are seeking donations for the second stage. If you would like to help with this project, please visit the Donate and Get Involved page.

Dr. Yanne’s Mobile Clinic

Dr. Yanne is a Cuban doctor who has been working with the Haiti Mission for many years providing health care to the Haitian communities. In 2021 she came to us with a dream to create a Mobile Clinic that could travel to the remote mountainous areas of Haiti to reach the communities that do not have any access to health care. Many live without clean water, access to basic medications, or medical care to diagnose any health concerns.

The Haiti Mission then began funding the Mobile Clinic program that allowed Dr. Yanne to make monthly visits to numerous locations throughout the countryside. Despite fuel scarcities and difficult travel, Dr. Yanne was able to see 300-400 patients per month. The ailments she treated range from stomach issues to malnutrition to serious surgeries. Each patient contributed what they could for the medical treatment but Dr. Yanne still had monthly expenses to cover the difference as well as her travel costs. She has been incredibly dedicated and passionate about her work to help those who are suffering. She even took in a young boy that she nursed back to health after finding him in dire condition. He decided to stay and work for her in the clinic.

When the gangs came to Haiti and took over the city of Port-au-Prince, Dr. Yanne was concerned for the clinic but she continued to help those in the community. One day, she was working in her office when she received word that the gangs had crossed the river and were headed to her location. She barely escaped out the back door before they came into the office. They killed the young boy who was helping her in cold blood before looting the rest of her clinic supplies. Words cannot describe the pain and sorrow that Dr. Yanne felt after this happened. She fled to Cuba to her family.

You would think that Dr. Yanne would not want to return to such a tumultuous country but she loves the Haitian people and she is wanting to come back to Haiti and restart her mobile clinic. This will take significant investment to get the clinic back up and running but it will bring so much help to those who have even more limited healthcare options now. We are looking for donations to restart the mobile clinic. If you would like to help, please visit the Donate and Get Involved page.
